Joop recently retired from bedside nursing in the Emergency Department of the Leiden University Medical Centre, a Level one trauma center in the Netherlands.
He has served in this ED in a variety of roles: management, education coordinator, and charge nurse, for a total of more than 35 years.
He is currently serving as a member of the Board of Directors of the Emergency Nurses Association, the worldwide biggest organization for Emergency Nurses, based in Schaumburg, IL. He was the first non-US nurse to be elected to this board.
Besides his work in the LUMC, he is also active as a member of the Education Board for Emergency Nursing Education of the College of Health Education (CZO) in the Netherlands. This Board monitors the quality of training.
He is also a member of the Dutch Independent Complaint Commission for Health Care, section Acute Care.
He was one of the founding members of the Dutch Association for Emergency Nurses.
His passion is striving for global excellence in Emergency Care. He has published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing, and still is active in training ER nurses in the Netherlands.
