Getting to Leuven

 

Leuven is easy to reach by plane, car, and train.

By Train: Leuven is only 15 minutes from the Brussels International Airport, 20 minutes from Brussels city center, 40 minutes from Antwerp, 50 minutes from Liège, 90 minutes from the Belgian coast and at 2 to 3 hours from cities like Düsseldorf, Paris, Amsterdam, Calais, etc.

By plane: The Brussels International Airport is a 15 minute train ride from Leuven. The airport train station is located below the terminal (basement, level 1). Several trains each hour connect the airport to Leuven and Brussels. Visit the airport website.

Alternatively, you can fly into the Charleroi Airport, located 90 km from Leuven. Many European discount airlines offer flights landing in Charleroi. There are several bus, shuttle and train options to Leuven or Brussels.

By car, Leuven is conveniently located at the junction of two major motorways: E40 and E314.

 

 

Accommodations

The conference hotel is a 10 minute walk from the conference venue and is located in the heart of Leuven's city center. The Kloosterhotel, whose main building dates to the 16th century, is known as the best hotel in Leuven and hosts many international meetings each year. Discounted rooms are available to IEDLI participants at a rate of € 165.00, which includes breakfast and wireless internet access. Please contact the hotel directly for reservations, and mention that you are a part of the IEDLI conference. Note that there is a daily shuttle offered to and from the venue for all IEDLI participants who would like to choose this option.

For those who prefer a discounted option, the Ibis Hotel, located only 10 meters from the Kloosterhotel, offers a rate of €112.00 during the week (and € 85.00 on the weekend) to IEDLI participants. This rate includes breakfast (note there is a supplement of € 14.00/night for a double person). Please contact the hotel directly for reservations, and mention that you are a part of the IEDLI conference.

Course Venue

The 2012 course will be held at the Faculty Club in Leuven, Belgium. The Faculty Club is a unique conference and banqueting center situated in the Grand Beguinage of Leuven, a 13th century historical site which was recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

These modern conference facilities are housed in the historic beguinage's infirmary, which dates back to the 13th century, and which was renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, and in the adjoining Convent of Chièvres, which was built in 1561.

 

 

About Leuven

Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located about 30 kilometers east of Brussels and is home to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the largest and oldest university of the Low Countries and the oldest Catholic university in existence. Leuven is also where the first "Club of Leuven" meeting took place which resulted in the founding of EuSEM, the European Society of Emergency Medicine. In fact, at IEDLI 2012 we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Club of Leuven.

Leuven is also known for its historic Beguinages. The Grand Beguinage, in which the IEDLI 2012 course will take place, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.
