IEDLI Advanced Emergency Department Leadership Course
October 24-26, 2012
Detailed program agenda will be online soon
Program Description
This 3-day program is available for those who have completed the 2009, 2010 or 2011 IEDLI Essential Emergency Department Leadership Course and is designed to more fully explore the topics presented in the essentials course. The Advanced Studies in Leadership will introduce additional topics of ED leadership and explore those issues currently affecting emergency department leaders. This program will also allow alumni to renew friendships and acquaintances made during the 2009, 2010 and 2011 programs.
The program will run concurrently with the Essential Program on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, in a separate classroom at the Leuven Faculty Club. All social events, including lunches and the Thursday night social dinner, will be held jointly.
Below please find session descriptions from the 2011 IEDLI Advanced Emergency Department Leadership Course, which was held in Boston, MA. Please note that the 2012 agenda is subject to change and will be online soon. Please check back for an updated schedule.
Wednesday, October 24 (tentative program - to be updated)
Developing the Physician/Nurse team in the ED
The success of any Emergency Department is dependent upon a strong working relationship between nurses and physicians. Programs aimed at improving physician skills and knowledge will have limited success without corresponding programs for nurses. This session will help participants:
* Discuss the role of nursing in the modern ED;
* Explore ways to build interdisciplinary nurse/physician teams;
* Understand the physician's role in nursing education;
* Develop trust with those working in different disciplines.
Advanced Topic - Public Relations Techniques and Workshop
In this session, participants will use case studies to develop strategies for dealing with public relations issues common to the Emergency Department. We will look at ways to deal with:
* Accusations of substandard medical care;
* Public health problems as they relate to the larger community including pandemics, weather
emergencies, disasters and multiple-casualty incidents;
* Other big news stories that may affect the ED;
* Informing the community of recent changes in staffing, building design, or services
improvements.
Advanced Topic - Risk Management
While the specifics of the medical legal environment may vary from country to country, there is a consensus among IEDLI participants that medical legal liability concerns related to emergency department practice are increasing in many countries. This case-based session will explore general issues and strategies related to risk management on a more in-depth, interactive basis.
Budget Workshops
Building on knowledge acquired during the basic course, and using an interactive case study format, we will assess financial and non-financial factors regarding the acquisition of a new service or piece of equipment in an ED. This session will:
* Introduce the concept of return on investment calculations;
* Apply new knowledge and skills to a real case scenario;
* Develop and analyze different solutions.
Emergency Department Informatics
Effective operational management of the Emergency Department and clinical management of patients in the Emergency Department increasingly depend upon the gathering and exchange of information. Successful Emergency Department leaders need to understand the spectrum of operational and clinical data necessary for running a safe and efficient department, as well as understand the types of informatics tools that are available for gathering and exchanging this information.
This session will touch on issues related to:
* Information needs related to clinical management of patients in the ED (electronic patient medical records, diagnostic and lab data, , patient/ data tracking
* Information needs related to operational management of the ED (patient volume, flow data; time stamping of actions related to work and patient flow)
* Computerized Provider Order Entry
* Clinical decision support
* integration of real-time communication (PCP notifications, critical value alerts, paging consultants, flags, PCP call-ins, provider)
Thursday, October 25 (tentative program - to be updated)
An Introduction to LEAN
Lean management, typically associated with Japanese manufacturing and the Toyota Production System, is a proven process improvement and management strategy that focuses on cutting costs by improving efficiency, eliminating waste and streamlining and standardizing processes. This introductory session will introduce participants to using Lean methods in the Emergency Department in order to:
* Impact productivity;
* Reduce cost;
* Improve quality;
* Improve patient care.
Lean: A case study in ED Flow
During this interactive session, participants will have the opportunity to analyze and discuss a real-life case study from a local emergency department. Lean methods will be applied to improve patient flow through an ED. Experts will lead the discussion and share their experiences with the course participants.
Celebratory Dinner (dinner included with your registration)
Friday, October 26 (tentative program - to be updated)
Advanced Project Planning
Navigating major organizational change seems to be a common theme that many IEDLI participants report having dealt with in the recent past or anticipate dealing with in the near future. Changing the organization without a plan is like driving cross country without a map. This session will use a case-based approach to address components of strategic planning including:
* Doing research on the change
* Formulating a strategy
* Implementing the strategy
* Measuring results and controlling the process
Leadership Challenges: Case Studies
Using a model adapted from the Harvard Business School case method, participants will be put into the role of decision maker, form teams, and work through potential solutions to common ED leadership problems. The facilitator will ask questions to guide the discussion and probe underlying issues while helping the participants explore alternative solutions and decide on a strategy. Participants will do the majority of the work in this session, with the facilitator providing feedback and guidance. The objectives of this session are to:
* Help develop analytic and problem solving skills;
* Encourage participants to explore different solutions for complex issues;
* Allow participants to apply new skills and knowledge.
